Character Info
Full Name: Ruui (secondborn)
Race: Columbine
Class: Civilian (messenger)
Age: 11 (roughly 22 by Mundane standards)
Sexuality: Mundane-sexual (only attracted to Mundanes, and mostly heterosexual)
Bio (personality/history):
Ruui is a positive and straightforward girl, and has a lot of energy in a little body. Despite being fully mature, she stands at a mere 4’9”. Like her parents, she resembles a Rose Crowned Fruit Dove, and her small shock of pink head feathers make her both strange and exotic when people meet her. People might be more endeared to her if she was less loud and hyperactive, but she always seems to be making noise and causing a ruckus wherever she lands. Despite mostly socializing with Mundanes, even Ruui understands there is a difference between her and them that goes beyond feathers and scaly legs, but she still looks forward and hopes to overcome those racial barriers. Her persistence, and even bullheadedness at times, adds to her ‘never give up’ attitude.
There are times when Ruui is quiet and contemplative, often at night when she tries to remember everything she did during the day before falling asleep. She also gets to wondering before sleep comes, of things like how life might have been if her parents had raised her, what it would be like if she were a Mundane, and other such fanciful thoughts. She is a dreamer and a lover of stories, and while she loves musing ‘what ifs’ she doesn’t them hold her back from aiming for the future.
Among the fruits she normally eats, her favorites are cherries and grapes. She often fights between ‘not letting them go to waste’ and eating them quickly or ‘saving the best for last’ portioning them out to last longer. And despite her love of sweet Yellow Onions, the closely related Garlic makes her feathers stand on end just from the smell of it.

Ruui’s parents, father Tiii and mother Cuua, originated from more tropical regions before making roost in the free city of Highwell. They worked as messengers and deliverers in the early days of Weller’s Medicinal Trade business, and played a key role in the business’ more important and sensitive product deliveries around the land. The trust between Mr. Weller and the Columbines was one rarely shared between people of mundane and anthropomorphic races. By the time the pair finally decided to clutch, Mr. Weller’s business had grown quite large, and being located at the only free harbor, business was booming indeed. He had made many contracts with Herbalists to buy and sell their products, and had made a healthy profit doing so.
Their firstborn Ruui had been ill and misshapen and died soon after hatching. Mr. Weller had felt awful for them, particularly having two young daughters of his own, but it was just as common as a miscarriage in mundanes the pair had assured him. Their second clutch produced the secondborn Ruui, who was born healthy and grew well. She was a ball of energy from the very beginning, always wandering here and there and getting into things she shouldn’t.
When Ruui was 2 years old, Mr. Weller received an urgent and highly sensitive package to be delivered to the East of Paladrion Forest. He felt he could trust no one else with this mission and asked for Tiii and Cuua’s assistance in taking the package to its destination, and the pair agreed, leaving their chick to visit the Weller’s for a few days while they were gone..
It was over a month before he found out he’d sent his messengers to their deaths. A report came in that they had been taken down by a band of rogue felines, their wings and bodies torn to shreds, and the package no where to be found. Mr. Weller smelled more foul play than a simple rogue band randomly targeting his messengers, but there was nothing to be done.
The guilt in Mr. Weller’s heart, coupled with the fatherly feelings he felt for his two girls, is likely what made him adopt the young toddler Columbine into his home. His wife had words to say to him about his decision, but his young daughters, 7 year old Rose and 10 year old Amy, loved having her in the house, and were excited that she would stay instead of only visit.
It can’t be said that they were like family, Ruui was treated more as a ward or a beloved pet by the family at large. But it was the only home she knew or remembered, and loved it just the same. The differences between Mundanes and Columbines became obvious as their feathered friend matured. Lacking hands, Ruui’s personal room had to be outfitted with low-lying cabinets so she could more easily use her feet to get at her possessions. When guests were over, she would need to eat dinner in her room, as eating with her feet was distasteful to most Mundane guests.
Still, for all the problems that arose, there were that many more good times. Amy and Rose Weller loved going out on the town with their Columbine companion, though they both swore she cheated at Hide and Seek. As Ruui went through maturity with the girls, her tastes in partners came to reflect their, namely young able-bodied Mundane boys. Growing up in the Weller house, she became disconnected from her fellow Columbines, and took on a more Mundane outlook, and is a classic example of nurture over nature.
When she became old enough, she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her parents whom Mr. Weller had trusted so much, and took to the role of a carrier messenger about the city. Mr. Weller, the trauma and guilt of her parents death still weighing on him all these years later, gave her jobs restricted to the city limits where he could keep an eye on her. She proved to be a good flyer, and great with directions, qualities needed in a messenger Columbine.
But the city, free as it was, had started feeling more restrictive as Ruui became more mature. She started feeling trapped, and begged to take deliveries to far away places so she could really stretch her wings. Mr. Weller always refused. Truly, Ruui could have just flown away if she desired as her Columbine instincts might have told her, but she desperately wanted her beloved adoptive father’s approval. Another reason she didn’t want to just up and leave her roost was because Amy had just gotten married and moved away, and she knew Mr. Weller was sad enough that one daughter had left. To try and prove herself, she set to studying maps of the known world, asking the sailors about navigation, and generally preparing herself for the day she would fly the world.
Although it took time, Ruui’s persistence and show of preparation won out in the end, with the promise that she wouldn’t take on any dangerous work, and would always be careful outside the Free City. She embraced Mr. Weller in a feathery hug and then set off on her journey, the first of many to come.

Ruui never knew just how cramped her wings had felt until she let them stay open for hours riding the thermals high above the land below. Her wings felt as wide as a dragon’s and she soared in her sky domain. She felt truly free.
But, despite studying maps, the terrain from a real Bird’s Eye View was quite different than the brush strokes on paper. Until she learned her routes she had to pull herself away from her fantasies and pay attention for landmarks, and make mental links to correlate between what she saw on the ground and the maps in her memory. At the very least, direction was her ally, and the maps were spot on when it came to marking the areas of cities.
Thinking too much about the terrain below, the drag that kept her aloft was starting to slow, and she had to flap her wings a few times to return to the proper angle for gliding. She’d been making long distance deliveries for a few months now, but still she was learning how to manage between her thoughts, her flight, and her destination. She was getting better at judging weather patterns, and learning to listen to her instincts when they told her to fly a different route. It only took one curious flight through a dark cloud to teach her to respect the power of Mother Nature in the sky.
A bit below and ahead of Ruui she noticed a muddy-red form of a hawk. Her imagination sparkled, what would it be like to soar with a hawk? She angled her wings down slightly to descend while picking up some speed to catch up to her target. She didn’t want to blow past the hawk and scare it away and so controlled her speed. She flew by in a sideways arc, so the Hawk would see her, but she’d be far enough away to not be a threat. She displayed the backs of her wings to the bird as she passed, and then continued the sidewinder flight path to invite the Hawk to fly with her.
Sadly, dreams and reality often clash, and what could have been a fun dance in the air with a bird of prey, instead saw the bird peel off to the left away from the Columbine. Still Ruui smiled at what could have been, and then continued on to her destination, spirits high looking towards what the future would bring.
