The northern winds had not flow gently under her wings for this journey.
She'd caught a stroke of luck, catching a beautiful stream of air and a clear sky during her flight to the capitol. The otherwise near fourteen days worth of flying had only taken her a mere six, though both exhausted and hungry she was when she arrived. A small price to pay in return of a safe journey, Goddess knows it was not to be taken for granted at any time, considering the current state of affairs across the land. Too many of her kind were lost through what should have been simple tasks.
Though Magpie knew better, and had indeed not taken the ease for granted, she still ended up suffering the wraths of the heavens on the long way back home. Rain and thunder she cut through, stopping only when the flashing lights drew closer to her position, or when the winds were simply too strong for even a columbine's wings to beat against. Unfortunately, those times were not as few and far between as she would've liked. The time wasted on having to find safe shelters, where she could hopefully catch some semblance of sleep, resulted in a delay of almost an entire week. She didn't have high hopes of her handler being in a good mood once she finally returned, nor that she herself would.
A day's flight away from Boul, Magpie made a last stop at the border of the Northern Woods. Her feet touched the ground in a small glade, having spotted a pool of clear water from above. Oh, how she had longed for a proper drink, unlike what could be found in the filthy puddles outside Quakerion. Earthy but clean and fresh, the water of home had no equal in the columbine's eyes. As such, she threw a quick look around, assured herself that she was alone, and bent down to quench her thirst.
