The Great Awakening Festival is a national three day celebration of the High Goddess Pa'landri's salvation of the land and the rebirth of the Sun. It is celebrated by every race across the country, is the largest and most important of all events, as well as the Palandri equivalent of New Years.
On the first day of the Great Awakening Festival, the past year comes to it's end with grand festivals held in each of the capitals. It is tradition for many to spend this day drinking until they can drink no more, and then drink more still until they pass out with no memory of this day, just as there is no memory of what was before the Great Darkness.
On the second day of the Great Awakening Festival, not a single light may be lighted until the sun rises on the third day, symbolizing the Great Darkness which once enveloped the land. The festivities, however, continue on from the first day to the third.
On the third day of the Great Awakening Festival, the New Year begins as the people cheer with the rising sun and vanquishes the darkness. Once nightfall comes, a beacon is lit in each tower of the White Dragon Palace, shining through the night until the sun rises again.
OTHER NOTES:
Smaller human societies - whose populations are unable to attend the festivities in the main cities - tend to have their own similar albeit noticeably smaller celebrations of this holiday.
The amount of raids and criminal activities conducted during the course of this festival is generally a lot fewer than at any other time of the year.
The Grand Capital, Palandrion, is never as crowded as it is during this festival. It is virtually impossible to travel any great length through the city.
The Piscine tend to hold contests among themselves as for who can manage to bring light from the sun the deepest down into the ocean.
Groups of Elapine can sometimes be found sunbathing together during the third day.
Great flocks of Columbine tend to venture closer to - or in some cases into - human cities and villages to join the festivities...
...as do some Feline.
Lupine come together to the centre of their pack's territory and light a great bonfire, which they keep burning throughout all three days of the festival. This is the only exception to the no-lights tradition on the second day of the festival.
